AB OBJECTIVE: To assess patient and caregiver satisfaction with a
nurse-based system of handling common HIV-related outpatient problems.
METHOD: A nurse-based, algorithm-guided system was developed and
implemented to help a nurse clinician at a tertiary-referral medical
center handle HIV-related outpatient problems. Surveys were administered
to patients and caregivers before and after implementation of this
system to assess satisfaction with the change from primarily
physician-based to nurse-based care. RESULTS: Preliminary data show that
patients and caregivers are satisfied with the competence and
availability of the nurse clinician. In addition, physician time spent
handling routine questions and problems appears to have decreased.
CONCLUSIONS: HIV-infected patients and their caregivers perceive that
nurse clinicians can deliver high quality care in a timely manner. Such
care is delivered cost effectively by reducing physician involvement
with routine, straightforward outpatient problems.
